Year-in-Beer Week 6

Year-in-Beer Week 6 is 21st Amendment's Back in Black.

From 21st's website:

Inspired by Paul Revere's midnight ride, we rebelled against the British style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then recast it in bold, brave, defiant black. Our Black IPA is a Declaration of Independence from the tyranny of the expected.

Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

  1. 21st Amendment - Back in Black, Black IPA - 6.8% ABV, 65 IBUs - Hopped with Columbus, Centennial, & Simcoe.

Great can, Paul Revere riding through the streets of Boston on a chopper, that would have really gotten folks reved up for the Revolution!

The beer is full of dark, rich, roasted malt aromas, with light pine & citrus notes.

The beer pours a dark brown with a light tan head that sticks around for a while.

Dynamic taste: Full rich flavor, dark roast, with some coffee notes. An unexpectedly understated hop profile. The 65 IBUs are there and provide solid bitterness with a light citrus notes in the finish. I was looking for a more assertive hop approach, but I cannot deny that the beer is crafted well and goes down smooth.
    Enjoy.

  2. C- Dark Brown almost black

    A- Very hop forward

Taste – Surprising malt start to the taste that ends with a strong hop finish. There are some strong roasted notes.

Overall – My first sip made me think cough medicine. The more I drank, the better it gets. The odd thing is that it seems like I get different flavors with each sip. One sip will be overwhelming, and then the next will be relatively soft. Black IPAs are the new vogue beer style, and that is certainly a good thing. The problem for this beer is that there are so many brewers doing it well it is overshadowed by better competitors despite throwing a ton of flavor.
